Abstract |
Background. The article deals with the problem of social and cultural adaptation of migrant children to the school environment conditions. Further development of the personality of the child migrant, the ability to function as part of a new culture and to recognize the norms and values of the host country largely depend on whether the adaptation stage has been successful or not. The research objective is to study the school adaptation process of migrant children and identify factors affecting the adaptation mechanisms of the said group.
Materials and methods. This article was prepared on the basis of a sociological survey conducted at secondary schools of Nizhny Novgorod in 2016. The respondents were school teachers and students’ parents. Formal interviews were used as the primary method of information gathering.
Results. The study has revealed a rather strong dependence of the migrant student adaptation on relationships with peers and teachers, as well as the involvement of parents in child’s learning process. The materials and research results offer new possibilities for in-depth study of the subject and can be used in lecture courses of family sociology, educational sociology and social work.
Conclusions. The problem of interaction between migrant pupils and teachers occurs against the background of children’s communication with peers. The family as a special social institution needs to teach a child to correctly perceive the receiving environment, society, culture and people around. Without parents’ own example and skills available to family education, the child is not able to independently overcome the difficulties of the new environment.
